Sorry mate about the slow reply, I live in Victoria and the dwarf bananas supposedly only grow to around 2 or 3 metres.

can banana trees grow and fruit in melbourne? i was in sydney this week and saw some growing in people's gardens, bearing lots fruits but still green. How come bananas fruit during winter and I suppose ripen in spring?

My bananas grow just fine out in the back yard here in Melbourne. So if they're not supposed to, don't tell them because clearly they're not aware of that...lol. As an aside...I have a spare dwarf Red Dacca languishing in a pot if anyone would like it. You'd need to pick it up as it's too big to post. Would prefer to swap for something interesting...I'm avail via http://myfolia.com/gardener/epiphany

I've fruited Lady finger here, pretty small and crapy bunch but they were edible:!) and I wasn't the first in town to fruit them. Dwarf Ducasse should fruit this year and *should* be better. Melbourne is 3c warmer and much much easier for banana's
