Hi,
I have recently taken out some pawpaws due to black spot and poor positioning on my part and now I have decided to try the dwarf papaya sold by daleys...my question is to all the papaya/pawpaw experts- when i look at the flowers on this bisexual tree to me they seem male at this stage- they are not directly coming off the trunk like female flowers... did i get a dud male plant when i really need a plant of the more female persuasion or will it be true to its listing and provide male and female flowers???
I know there is a chance i have a dud but i am hoping i don't have to try again with another planting.

Hi Maxzoo,
It's definately a Male plant buddy - only thing you can do is leave it as an ornamental plant, if you have other papaya that are female then leave the male their to cross pollinate or last resort is to cut it down and mulch it.
This is just my opinion mate - please do your own research - follow the link i have given you and make up your own mind.
Hope you have better luck next time with Papaya.

Get seeds from a solo and the chances of getting a male will be halved in most cases.

I am sure they are good but i never had a good one as they always rotted or got eaten by a critter. the tree also got big quick and i decided it was an uphill battle to keep them so out they went. The idea of a dwarf variety is better for me...as long as i get a fruiting specimen....is there a moneyback guarantee?

I have two papaya trees that are growing really well and seem to be really happy. One is a Papaya southern red - bi-sexual variety and the other is just a normal red variety but I'm pretty sure it is a male. During winter the male was flowering even though we have quite cold winters here. The flowers were opening right out. But now that it is summer I have flower buds, but the flowers are not opening, but are either dropping off or getting eaten by something at bud stage. Has anyone else had this problem and could give me some advice into what is going on. Many thanks! Kaz
