Dwarf Red Mulberry Cuttings (forum)

In anticipation of a happy arrival in the mail (thanks Nick T!), I have been reading and apparently these are not so easy to grow from cuttings unlike the ordinary black. Does anyone have any tips? I was told to use honey and the rooting powder by one person. I thought maybe to increase my chances I might try grafting one or two onto my black. I read elsewhere to put some in water till roots developed.

Is it the dwarf red shahtoot mulberry? I tried many times to get the white to grow from truncheons/cuttings without any luck. Apparently the shahtoots are difficult. Air layering might be the way to go.

Just 4 weeks back, I received dwarf red shahtoot mulberry cuttings from Nick T (thanks again!). He said cuttings are very easy to strike. Cutting has already few leaf buds. One of the leaf bud on one cutting continued to grow as if branch was never cut. 2 mulberries have popped out of that leaf bud now even before the appearance of first leaf. Now I can see tiny leaves as well but they seems bit pale and yellowish.. I don't think cutting has rooted in just 4 weeks, that bud might be using energy/food from the cutting.. Cuttings seems to be getting dried out.. So it will be wait and watch game for me... I really hope it strikes.. Good luck with your cuttings Jenny !!!

Hi Db, that's sad news indeed. Mine are as you see, I dipped them in honey and the rooting powder. I'm still holding my breath with them, it's been just over a month. I nipped off the tiny fruits that were developing. The bud graft on my black mulberry died. If these grow when they are bigger you can have cuttings.

Jenny, that's sad news, looks like they are difficult to grow from cuttings then.. Last weekend only I visited Daley's and bought the plant instead of keep trying on this cuttings...

Dwarf black mulberry is supposed to be easy to grow from cuttings as compared to Red Shahtoot, so I was trying create more plants after I pruned mine in this winter, but those cuttings also died... I think we need much thicker cuttings (like 1-1.5cm thick) than what we tried..

That's a shame Jenny! I'll going to try some softwood cuttings soon and I'll be sure to notify you if they root :)

Difficulty in growing may be why Daley's Red Shatoots are grafted. Good luck anyway.
