edible climber for shade (forum)

ringelstrumpf starts with ...
We have a big water tank and I could put a star post or another post on each corner and strain some wires. What edible would grow there in shade? We are in cool climte and get down to minus 5 but the mass of the water would help somewhat.

Passionfruit is the 'traditional' edible climber to grow around water tanks. The water keeps them fron freezing but it need sun.

Understory vines that will take some frost and shade are hardy kiwifruits (Actinidia arguta and A. kolomikta) and one of the chocolate vines (Akebia sp.). If you grow a chocolate vine you will need to keep it under control as it can be a weed if the conditions are right.
If you want something that is not a climber try alpine strawberries or chilean guava, they both will grow and fruit in shade.

Depends on the amount of shade. I thought the 'normal' kiwi needed a bit more sun that the hardy types. But I could well be wrong.

Won't a vine/creeper just try to grow up towards the sun though? (and then flop over at the top of the wires?...) I always though a UV resistant net thrown over water tanks would be the way to go...(like fishing nets..)

Maybe it would be a good spot for berry canes ringlestrumpf?

How big is the tank? (Some are 100,000L and monsters!...)

For me yet 20.000 liters are big. Hardy kiwi sounds good,does it need a pollinator? I never tried growing or eating Akebia, but my fruit book says they don't taste and yield incredibly good.
Not all the parts of the tank are always in shade, and I think it is goo planting there because it keeps the water cool and is better for the plastic too.

I have two varieties of akebia growing but they haven't fruited yet. One of them is a hybrid that is supposed to be very good tasting and the other is another variety just to cross pollinate it. They should fruit next year.

Hardy kiwi is great, I have four species of kiwifruit growing and I love the A.arguta. It does need a pollinator but there is a self pollinating variety - 'Issai'

Both plants seem to be interesting, have to find a hybrid akebia. For the hardy kiwi daleys is producing two varieties one is red, but they don't really tell what's the difference.

I think their red one is a chance seedling.
I am growing A. melandra - a purple fruited variety. Mine should fruit next year.
A. kolomitka - a very hardy kiwifruit with the male having variegated foliage. My seeds haven't germinated yeat.
A. arguta - the 'normal' hardy kiwifruit. Seedlings at the moment but they are supposed to fruit within 3 years from seed. Unfortunatley everything seems to eat them so I mightn't get that far.
A. deliciosa - 'common' kiwifruit. first year fruiting.

You can get the seeds on many US sites. I just made an order for more A. melandra seeds from Summer Hill seeds http://www.summerhillseeds.com
It is listed on some sites as A.melandra, and on others as A. melanandra so it might be worth searching for both names.

The seeds for the vines I have growing came from rareseeds.com but they are out at the moment.
I can't wait till next year when they fruit.

Chocolate Vine flowering now!

One of my Akebias has quite a few flowers for the first time and I would like to know if they are self fertile or not. I have another Akebia variety next to it which I have had for a long time. But it has never flowered and doesn't grow much so there is nothing else to pollinate the flowering one.

Please let me know if they need another plant for pollination and in the mean time I will wait and see if it sets fruit. Thanks.
