Eggplants are mustard (forum)

I often get mustard coloured fruit amongst my purple ones on the same plants. this has happened both in Vic. & now in WA. I used to think that they tasted the same but one of the yellow ones gave a nasty bitter taste to a veggie bolonaise sauce so I have taken all the yellow ones off the plants. Anyone had the same experience & know the reason for the strange colour??

Hi snottiegobble - I have had the same thing happen just recently - it was an heirloom variety.. I don't know why though.

Mine were Blacknite from Yates. Surely there are others besides you & me who have had this phenomena??
I also bought a bergamot plant ( you know, the leaves give Earl Grey tea a distinct taste) It had buds that produced crimson flowers! After they all finished a second flush of flowers developed. They were all LILAC!
Honest, just one plant!

Hi snottigobble - mine was a "Listardia de Grandia" I thought it might have been the shade factor that made them yellow. Had no problems last yr with same one. This yrs plant grown under 70% shadecloth with some hand pollinating - the only difference.

Some of my eggplants were in broad sunlight & others under shade during hot months.
The plants are very bushy & so some of the fruit are shaded while others are not. It doest seem to be a factor in the colour difference.
