Has anybody espaliered feijoas? Do they have enough 'main' branches to be successful?

hello jo, i live in perth and our feijoa has just finished fruiting and yes the tree if left to its own devices will grow into a quite substantial "big" tree. i dont think you would have much trouble setting it up. as long as the trellis or wire is strong enough to support the weight. my wifes uncle grows them commercially in new zealand. good luck. randey

Thanks Randey. We are in the process of building a nice firm trellis and have found a good feijoa with suitable looking branches. Ex kiwi here so love the fruit. Jo

Excited to see this posting and hope you have progress reports. Having enjoyed the fruits of two big feijoa trees for the last few years I've moved into a place with no room for trees and am keen to know if espaliered feijoa trees are successful. Guidance would be appreciated. Cheers, Ann, Auckland NZ

I think they must vary, as my feijoa has never reached above two metres. It was a seedling given to me, and has never fruited.
I have grown feijoas before, in two different houses (they were already there), and none of them were large - but they did have fruit!

Depends entirely on the variety. We had a 'Unique' in NZ that never grew taller than me (I'm 160cm) but always produced heaps of fruit. My parents had two at their house - one was around 2m & the other was perhaps 3m? But they kept them pruned in a hedge shape. My husband says his aunt had a tree in their back yard but it was massive - like a big tree. If you don't have much room, they hedge well but you loose some of the fruit because of the need to prune all the time.
