I'm after the edible variety of fiddlehead fern. Anybody out there know where I might find any?

Update:

I was able to procure one from ebay. Scientific name diplazium esculentum.

Interesting PR journal with nutrition data. Quite healthy.

They are widespread in SE Asia, Oceanea and in rainforest areas of eastern Australia.Wild picked croziers are often on sale at Rusty's market.

Mike,

I've read that a few varieties are consumed, but consumption of the bracken fern has been associated with incidences of oesophageal and other cancers. It contains a substance called ptalquiloside, which is water-soluble and rather unstable(scientists were able to isolate this and test it on rats and ferrets who indeed developed tumors). It can be virtually eliminated by soaking and blanching the fiddleheads however.

Yes starling it is better to collect your crosiers from rainforested and wet sclerophyll alluvial areas than weed infested cow paddocks.
If someone cannot recognise bracken they should not be eating crosiers.
