Full sun , well drained , can be very fast growing , BUT prone to borers up here and I have lost several .

Chambeyronia macrocarpa is from New Caledonia and can be very fast growing , the 'Watermelon' variety has yellow streaking om crownshaft . I do not know of many seed bearing plants and they could be imported , though often available at palm specialist nurseries . New leaf is a stunning deep red colour .

Hi Phil, if still looking for flamethrower palm try http://www.burringbarbotanicgardens.com/stocklist-retail.html .These guys also have interesting varieties of Davidson's plum trees and other native fruits.

Hi, there's a place in Bundaberg called Exotic Green that has been regularly selling these palms online.

They're called, Chambeyronia macrocarpa var. houailou hookeri watermelon Red Leaf Palm or Flamethrower Palm.

So they're the watermelon type and might be easier to buy a plant than trying to grow from seeds if the cost is no obstacle. Last time for a seedling they were 69.95 plus 25.00 postage so not cheap!

Not hard to find and much more cold hardy than you'd think.

Grown successfully in Melbourne since 2003 (in my case). Has therefore coped with with long droughts and 48 degrees..with temps close to zero in deepest winter.

Gorgeous.
