Frost protection for young trees (forum)

Hi,
I hope some one can help me. I need to protect some young tress from frost. Do I cover the tops but not the sides - like putting a little shade sail over them, or do I cover the sides and leave to top open?. I want to protect them for the whole winter (without killing them with darkness !) as I don't have time to be covering and uncovering them ( I have 2 new twins which restrict my time in the garden now)
Thanks, Linda

Hi Linda
Last year I protected my young citrus by surrounding them with straw bales and my passionfruit by lowering Hession on it overnight. The plants all survived well.

Hi Joann, Thanks for that - did you cover and uncover your passionfruit every day?

Hi linda
Sorry for the late reply. Yes I uncovered them every morning once the sun got on them and threw the hession over them before I went to bed. I only covered them on clear nights. Jackie french has some good things to say about frost protection in her backyard gardening books. Cheers, Jo

Doesn't sound very warm peetah! I think almost anyhing would hold warmth better than plastic. Could you get some old cotton curtains from an op shop?
