grape vines in pots (forum)

Hi everyone

I wonder if anyone knows lots about grapevines? I am about to build a pergola/trellis/watsit with a view to growing grapevines up and over it. It now looks as though it will be impractical to grow this in the ground so I am having a rethink. I know that grapevines are successfully grown in pots, so I'm now wondering about this. I'm assuming that a grapevine in a pot won't grow as big as a grapevine in the ground, and so where I might have planted, say 2 in the ground, I might want 6 in pots. That's okay.

Is it still feasible to grow them over a trellis? How large a pot would they need? I am assuming that, if I am training it over a trellis, that future repotting will be close to impossible (though, maybe not, maybe a brutal prune that season, repot it and fingers crossed?) and that I need a large pot, and one made of something "permanent" like terracotta, rather than a wine barrel or plastic pot.

A radical rethink is actually possible, here, and grapevines pruned to be "standards" could be in pots elsewhere (and would be much easier to repot in future), so even if I can't make the trellis idea work, I can probably still have my grapes and eat them too. :)

Anyone got any experience? I've never had grapevines...

Thanks!
Miranda

Just a thought miranda - grapes grown 'up 'n over' are very hard to protect from birds, unless you bag each bunch (hard work).

The traditional trellis, where they grow to each side, is much easier to cover with netting etc.

Julie, we did also think about the bird thing. I did lots of investigating into permanent bird wires etc but no really good solution presented itself.
The trellis, if low enough, would be easy enough to toss a net over so that's a much better option from that point of view.

We were thinking of the grapevine as a bit of climate control for the house - casting shade in summer etc. But, I think I'm deciding to do some outdoor blinds on the window to get better control anyway, so the graprvine up and over isn't going to be necessary.

Wonder if I could trellis them in a pot? Don't see why not, but they'll be smaller, so I'll need more. If I could trellis them in a pot that would solve a different problem elsewhere...
