Growing avocado tree in a pot (forum)

Db starts with ...
Is anyone successful in growing avocado tree in a large pot / growing woven bag? By successful I mean nice big tree which is fruiting. Due to insufficient space I'm thinking to grow avocado in big woven bag.
Regardless of above question, which variety is better - Secondo or Feurte? I'm planning to get only one. I can see secondo sets well by itself. So secondo can give much bigger crop than Fuerte if I'm growing only 1 tree.. But I don't need too many fruits anyway.. So which variety tastes better and can start fruiting earlier?

I have a pinkerton in a pot, only been there like less than a year, so not successful by your definition. It's rather tiny by avocado tree standards and no fruit yet.
it's probably very challenging (at least in my experience) to grow them in pot, as they are quite fussy. Too hot, leaves drop, too dry, leaves drop and I can't get it to a lush green state that some other members here have been able to achieve.

sorry can't help with that one, as I'm not an avo fan ... only thought of growing one because the wife is spending too much on avocados.
though I can say is, avoid Wurtz, I have one on ground, died, one in pot, died. So in my final and last last attempt, picked the pinkerton and so far, it's surviving.
I only picked the Wurtz because it's dwarf ... so thought it might be suitable for pots. Pinkerton is a semi-dwarf. Haven't thought of growing any full size one yet.
you might want to have a read of the following ABC article.

good luck :)

Fuerte takes a long time to start fruiting, at least a couple years longer than the other varieties

Jason, does your Fuerte fruits every year or alternate year only? Daleys describes this variety as having 'alternate bearing characteristics'. If that's the case then it may not be worth it.

Db, no mines not from Daleys, all the avocados I bough from Daleys had bad grafts and died actually but I the grafters they have working for them change with the years they might be on a good run at the moment. I got my trees in the late 90s. Even if my trees set fruit in the first year I don't let them fruit for about 3 years. But Fuerte is known to be slow to get into fruiting and mine didn't set any fruit within the first 5 years.
It sets fruit any year when the temperature is over 17c at night during Spring (flowering). That happens every year but only for a few days so I don't get many fruit. That's why I (and anyone else that lives in cool climates) mostly grow the type A avocados which flower during the day time.
I'm really growing type B's as pollinators, since I don't get many fruit from any of them.
