Growing Peanuts (forum)

I used to grow peanuts here over 30 years ago, might start growing them again :-)
I used to buy 'raw' peanuts in their shell, crack 'em open and plant the two nuts (thin shell on).
They like a sweet loose soil also. (Dolomite and fertilizer).
Funny thing, mine were always a lot bigger than the bought ones, and a lot had 3 peanuts inside! (sometimes 4!)
We'd roast them in the wood stove for ~ 8 to 10 minutes each side. Boy they were yum!
Just wondering if anyone else has grown them?
They would grow well in your sandy soil amanda :-)

I've got plenty of raw VKI peanuts here if you want some Brendan. I don't worry about growing them anymore, but now that you mentioned it. Found some filter press yesterday

I bought a pot of seedlings from Bunnies a month ago. After planting them out into a very loose, perfect draining garden mix, I just haven't been able to keep the water up to them, so aren't doing too good. Might try again next year. So... where can I buy raw peanuts from, to use as seed next year?

John
I first started growing peanuts from raw ones purchased at the supermarket but I don't know if they are now treated to stop this.
I think Eden seeds sell them, try an Asian shop or a produce place that sells stock food.
May I suggest to use the VK1 peanuts [beer nut size] otherwise you get those piddly Spanish ones.
They are great to grow and there is nothing like home roasted fresh peanuts

Hmmm, home grown fresh roasted peanuts, sounds very nice. I'll put them in my to do list. I just wish it'd rain, just a little bit. I'm sorry now that I left my peanut plants up to the elements, but they were taking up too much precious water.

Yeah Wayne, I might grab some raw peanuts from you, if only I could get up the hill!! (I reckon I could set crab pots on my road at the moment!)

Never heard of type VK1, but they sound ok.

I used to get my 'seed' from the Peanut Factory in Mky, it was where the Asian shop is now :-)

John Mc, maybe your soil was lacking dolomite or garden lime? I didn't think they needed lots of water?

You're right Brendan, they're planted in 80% composted horse manure. I'll rectify the matter today and hope it's not too late.

I tried shelled raw peanuts from the supermarket at the beginning of summer and had no success.

Next time I will go for a bag of the raw ones in the shell from an asian supermarket.

Do I have to wait for spring to plant in Perth?
