Hardy Kiwifruit (forum)

Has anyone ever grown the hairless hardy kiwifruit? I believe it tastes like the hairy one and you can also eat the skin.
Are the vines similar to the other in size and vigour. I believe you still need a male pollinator for this variety.
Any experiences you would like to relay would be helpful.
Thanks.

Yes, same size and vigour . Can be pollinated by standard Kiwifruit so do not need to buy another male. Taste not quite as good STRANGE AFTER TASTE

I've been looking at these, too - the hours of chill required vary between varieties. (The Issai variety that Diggers sell apparently won't fruit on the Perth coastal plain, but there are some other varieties that will.)
...probably not a drama for Canberra or the Blue Mountains, but just thought I'd mention it in case anyone from warmer places is looking at them! :-)

I am interested to hear an update on the Issai kiwiberry (hardy Kiwifruit).
Although proclaimed self-fertile, a lot of people have been sceptical.

I've recently put in a kiwiberry issai, but it hasn't had time to do more than grow about 6cm. I seem to recall looking at the cold/heat zones and deciding it would be okay in Perth on the coastal plain, though I see that Liz had different information.
I haven't invested a lot in it, if it doesn't work, but I've got a long time to wait to find out, so I'm also interested in other people's experiences.

MJ, I don't think chill should be a problem so much as the lack of male pollen.
Where did you buy the Issai? Diggers are the only stockers that I know of and they don't have any ready at the moment.

The Issai came from Diggers, about five months ago? They must have run out since then.
It has been dormant over winter, but has started to shoot now.
I did lots of googling and read different opinions on whether or not a single plant would fruit. It was economical enough that I thought it was worth an experiment. I do have room for a male if needed, but if I go down that path I'll probably get a pair of Sweetie kiwis from Daleys. I don't really have enough room for them, though so I wanted to try the kiwiberry first.
Bye

Now that u mention it Lester - they do have some kind of after taste...it's not bad - but it's not pleasant either..?
I don't know how to describe it....astringent maybe.
I saved seed from these punnets and stratified them for months in the fridge ...but I don't know if I can be bothered now to be honest..
The gold kiwifruit I would tho.. :)
