Hawaiian tropical guava (forum)

Candy starts with ...
2 years ago I bought an "Hawaiian Tropical Guava" at bunnings , It grows but to date no flowers and no fruit.I have a problem with the leaves as they look like they are burnt or rusted.I was told to spray with potassium and did so to no avail.Last summer I put dark netting over the tree thinking this would stop any burning from the sun.It grows and there is always new shoots but then they turn brown and wilt.PLEASE HELP

Hi Candy - are you able to post a photo (close up) of the leaves? Have you been over fertilising maybe? (particularly with synthetic fert's) Do you shallow water or give it nice deep soaks?

Hi Amanda, thank you for replying. will try and get photo not to good at the techo stuff. We have very sandy soil and we have bore water and in summer we use spinkler and let soak for a while everyday as it gets quite hot here,in winter we water only a couple of days a week .I fertilise with seasol every couple of months and we have sugar cane mulch around base.

Hi Candy - not too good!? Looks like it is burnt thru salinity to me. First I would get some gypsum - use as directed and give the tree a big flush with scheme water directly after (not the bore) - keep using scheme water and in the meantime get your bore water tested. It may be brackish - which is no good for fruit trees.
Clear away the grass to at least a one meter radius. Feed the tree some fertiliser with nitrogen - Powerfeed would be good. (Seasol is very low in nitrogen) Nitrogen deficiency makes salinity problems worse. Give it a bit of manure and compost as well - but not too much yet.
Wait and see what your bore water test reveals.
Some bore water contains alot of iron and sulphur - so it can smell like rotten eggs..? That's no so bad - but as u are so close to the ocean you will need to monitor your bore water. It may have been good 3yrs ago or such - but it does change...especially with drought and nearby heavy usage.
Let us know how u get on? The feedback is always really useful.
