I have grown a twisted hazelnut in a pot which did really well and had nuts. I think that is probably smaller growing than a normal Hazel though.

Contorted Hazelnut - Corylus avellana
I have had this Hazelnut in the ground for the past 5 years and it is no more than 60cm high so it could easily have been grown in a pot. The buds are just now coming out.
There is a fully grown one at Conifer Gardens in Olinda that would be about 3 metres high and the same wide so they're not a large tree and are very slow growing so could be kept in a pot for many years.
They make an amazing site when the catkins form on the branches and are all hanging down.
