Help to Identify Fruiting Vine (forum)

Hello, I have recently noticed a vine climing in and around some lilly pilly bushes along a council walkway and would like to identify it.

It is producing small round yellow fruits which hang off individual stalks at various lengths along the vine. In the green immature stage this is surrounded by a thorny looking cage which is actually quite soft and hairy. As the fruit matures it turns yellow and the hairy "cage" withers and drops away. (The picture provided is not the best, sorry, the ripe fruit got somewhat mashed in my pocket on the way home)

The fruit smells something like a passionfruit but is only approx. 2cm in diameter. Inside is a mass of dark seeds with a clear fleshy layer, again similar to passionfruit seeds, but the dark part of the seed is not smooth and hard like a passionfruit, instead looking grainy and spiky inside its fleshy surrounding.

I have had no reaction to rubbing this on my skin so went to the next step and put my tongue on the insides, which tastes quite sweet and pleasant with no burning or numbing effect.

Can anyone identify what this is?

Thanks
Jules

Passiflora foetida and there is much variation in the feral vines fruit quality. They can climb over other plants or form mats on the ground. In places like Townsville and Cairns they are rampant.
