How well do figs do in pots? (forum)

Have a few fig cuttings I'd rather grow in pots than put in the ground. I have LSU gold, Black mission, and an unknown Turkish variety.

Will these produce a decent amount of fruit if kept in large pots? What sort of soil/care do they need?

They will do fine in pots and they will produce good size, good quality fruit but if you want an abundance of figs, put them in the ground.

I'm thinking I might pot about 10 or 12--this should give me enough figs, maybe equal to a decent sized tree planted in the ground?

Thanks Mary

I had access to two large fig trees once; they were at least two stories high. A spiral staircase was built next to one with a platform on the top so we could get at the fruit from one side but everyday I would just pick half a dozen within reach (I'm just over 5 foot) from the ground. There would have been a thousand figs on each tree. No way would you get that result from trees in pots. :) However, I envy the room you have for 10 - 12 potted figs.

That's amazing! Bummer I won't get so many fruit. It's just that I know they won't get watered, as they are just too much of a risk to the plumbing, roof, and power to put near the house, so they will have to go in the paddock which is fairly brutal in summer.

Hi Starling, as MaryT said above figs do well in pot.. I'm growing one in large pot, its 1yr 10months old now.. It was leafless 1-1.5months back being deciduous but has started growing strongly now.. It gave me around 20 figs in first season, hopefully it will set more this time.. Here is photo -

Starling, are you in Australia? Pots are good and are very popular in the US. I have started growing mine in pots also as I have no more room in the ground. I'm in Sydney.

All my figs are in pots except one cutting that I put in the ground. It touches my roof and hot water tank; the spot is rather tight. I think I will have to boss it right back come winter. It's in its second season. It's bigger than the mother tree.

aus99a,

Yeah, in Australia--Brisbane.

Db--20 fruits in first season--that's encouraging. I'm thinking a dozen or so potted figs will definitely suffice based on that. Not going to be cheap though.

So hard to spot fruit fly larvae in figs and it is always a problem. I hate spraying so will be trying insect bags and organza bags from ebay this season.

How about the traps that daleys sell. Or are the figs to hard to miss?
