Huacatay (forum)

Huacatay is an Andean-Peruvian herb, I think it's in the marigold family - does anyone have this herb that they would share or sell?

"Huacatay, huacatay. Pronounced 'wah-kah-tie', it is sometimes called Peruvian black mint. This herb is central to much Andean cooking and is the Peruvian cousin of the marigold, a version of tagates minuta. Huacatay has very aromatic leaves which are ground into a paste (usually with a mortar and pestle) that adds flavor and depth to many Peruvian Andean dishes."

Mary, I have Mexican marigold - Tagetes Lemmonii. Very strong-smelling leaves, orange-yellow flowers.

Would this be the same? I saved some seeds.

Hi Julie; not sure about that. It's a type of Tagetes minuta. If the Maxican is edible maybe it can be a substitute? Will research. Thanks.

Julie I don't think the leaves of Tagetes Lemmonii is edible though the petals are possibly OK to eat. Only the Tagetes lucida has been cited as having edible leaves as far as I can gather. Thanks anyway.

Mary, Tagetes minuta is very easy to grow, but what is your purpose in growing it? I didn't think you could eat it.

I have grown it to deter nematodes, when I lived nearer to Perth with sandy soil. Don't get nematodes on our gravelly soils here.

Yes, Julie, it's edible but there are varieties of Tagetes minuta I believe and not all of them are as palatable as the Black Mint.. Google Huacatay or Huacatag sauce for recipes. Used a lot in Peruvian cuisine.

Got some seeds from America in the end; makes sense since it's Peruvian though they call it Mexican Marigold (described as Huacatay so I bought it). Now I have a surplus as you can see. Was opened and inspected by Quarantine.

B & T World Seeds have them listed as available for eight euros per pack. They usually come from France - I have ordered from that company before and highly recommend them.

Morten, I bought them from www.companionplants.com
They're in Ohio, USA but being seeds they cost little to post though there's the question of quarantine. I had no trouble getting them into Australia.

No worries; Morten. If your quarantine will allow it I can put some seeds in an envelope and send them to you.

I grow heaps both to eat(it's awesome!), for use as a natural insecticide, and for garden stakes. Tomatoes and beans grown on Tagetes minuta stakes have far less caterpillar and aphid issues.
If you want some seeds send me an email and I will post you out some freebies. No dramas at all>>> fairdinkumseeds@rocketmail.com

I have a website with lots of cool stuff, but I am always after more, so if you have ANY cool plants or seeds that are not on there, and see something you like the look of, I would LOVE to barter/trade seeds!

Have a rocking day regardless folks!!!
