Hybrid Chillies (forum)

This morning I was excited to see two very different chillies on one of my seedlings. The pointy one is the expected shape so the other is the alien. A little bit scary.

maybe you can name the new strain as the MaryT strain. :)
I recall from your other pics, you grow some round chillies as well, so maybe that's the other parent?
I am most curious, as to if there is a certain way to identify hybridised plants, as like you, I grow a few types and don't 'isolate' them.

Here they are in scale. So cute. I'm sure someone somewhere knows just how to determine its parentage but they are so fecund that I don't think anyone would want to bother. Brain I read that they need to be at 400m apart to be effectively isolated.

Mary, that looks very like a Habanero. I tried a chili that looked like that last year (though it was orange, not red)and it nearly blew the top of my head off! I only added a small amount to a heap of lentils.
A friend, stupidly, tasted one straight from the plant. It actually blistered her lips and she could hardly breathe.

Mary it is all a bit hazy now which varieties I sent around, but it was no joloke. They got the bhut and are just so 2012.Even moruga scorpions are a bit old hat. The king of sting is now Carolina Reeper.
Seriously it looks kinda familiar.

Very funny, Mike - now it's terrorising the harmless citizens in my chilli patch though I have no proof thus far. Will carry out taste test tomorrow to see if the hybrid is hot or mild. Phil's mild bell chilli might be the co parent.

Mary those darn bees have a lot inter-chili hanky panky to answer for. It looks like a hybrid.

Thank goodness that bees do what bees do, Mike :) If chillies attract bees then I'm happy to grow them, whatever weird fruit they want to throw up.
I tried them this morning; the taste test is inconclusive because though the hybrid is hot, so was its mother. A sliver of the 'new chilli' well munched numbs the mouth and tongue and caused my scalp to itch. So anyone could have been the Dad. The flavour is so so, but fragrant; I think I picked it too early.
