Identify this bug anyone? (forum)

I found some egg clusters deposited on my pak choy. They are yellowish and elongated. I have been getting quite a lot of cabbage white butterfly caterpillars so I thought they are butterfly eggs.

However the eggs hatched into small black ant-like insects that have wings. They are very agile and fast. Are they good bugs? I could not take any picture as they were too fast to get a clear snapshot.

Thanks!

Lucky You! I haven't had this amazing bug on my place in over 2 decades

It is a scale insect. You mighth tinlk that bad and it would be if you had lots of them but then maybe not as this particular scale is the natural source of shellac..from the lac insect that you have.

Go ahead and crush one!

Don't think they are scale insects or lac insects.

Yeah that looks like a type of cabbage, bok choi, couli or some other related family seed pods there that they are attached to yeah.. well it looks like a type of insect larvae that attacks that white cabbage moth. they lay there eggs in the pupa eat it and grow from the inside out. I want more of them in my garden. I think there a wasp

Yes Dr Greenthumb you are right. Those are pak choy plants and they are seeding. I do get lots of cabbage white butterflies coming to lay eggs and caterpillars.

And those egg clusters on the pak choy hatch into some ant-like black flying insects, they move very fast. Yes they seem to be like some wasp so I think they are predatory but I dont any name for them. Thanks!

Mike says...
It looks like a close relative of the common bean bug which enjoys damaging snake beans and a variety of other legumes.Your species/specimens is/are a little stouter and darker than the typical bean bug. They can form a tag team with a smaller green rounder bug which also branches out its tastes into solanaceae.

Bingo! Thanks Mike!
Yeah, this one was a small one - they get bigger and browner. The big guys dont like being photographed and always fly away. I'd need to switch to a longer lens...
