A friend of mine is interested in growing a Jackfruit tree, however, he is very specific about the type of flesh he wants the fruit to have. He hates the very slimy textured varieties and would prefer to plant a tree that produces a firmer flesh. Does any body know of a good variety that may suit his preference?

In malaysian they are called "honey gold" in tesco and others, however, not sure if that's a genuine variety but they are crispy and the flesh is 5mm thick, true golden yellow colour with no slime.

Hi Amanda,
You can freeze jackfruit segments minus seeds specially the crunchy one.

I do that once a year in summer and eat them in winter where there are not many tropical fruits around.

I threw out half a jakfruit (probably 3kgs worth) because the latex was getting on my nerves. Im very interested to hear more about the 'Brinsmead special' variety. Apparently its latex free.

Are the other Artocarpus trees similar? (sticky if you dont get exactly the right type)

I also found the table a while ago, at the below link, that describes the tree and pulp characteristics of a number of Jaks (based on growing in Florida). It says a few are able to be kept to 8 foot - is this crazy speak?

Hi Jujube - thanks! I buy the canned ones - made in Thailand - from asian grocer...they are lovely (to me anyway) I am also surprised how good the longons are (canned) better than canned lychees.

Hi Amanda,

I agreed with you that canned longan is much better than canned lychee because fresh longan fruit meat has much firmer texture than the juicy lychee one and the canning process by heating method made lychee more softer and watery.

JUJUBE FOR SALE IN MELBOURNE says...
Hi BJ,

I think you should grow the low latex jackfruit type ie chempadak which is much less work to remove segments. You just have to cut the skin and one hand holding the stem the other hand pull the skin off. There is another fruit, Marang which is very nice and I am not sure if it is related to jackfruit or not. It looks like a small chempadak when open but the segments are white not yellow and very pleasant smell. I am not sure if it can be grown in Brisbane or not but there are some grown in Cairns.

Thanks. Maybe I can try the Chempedak and maybe a Lakoocha. The Marang would be too tropical for the place I would like to plant it. I might also try a low latex Jakfruit, or two, and a Kwai Muk, for fun... Surely I'd have to like something from that group and the ones I don't I could eventually take to market :)

Hi Mira,
If you get desperate like I was and can't find any cultivars you can buy a fresh jackfruit and sow some seeds. I sowed every single one and they all germinated(about 40). I've got Jackfruit trees all around my place and they are a very fast grower. Mine are one year old and already some are five feet tall. My winters average around 5

Sharon give your tree a few more years like 7 years or more. Those you see fallen off are male flowers. Female flower have strong thick stalk and rough skin while male are the opposite.

I have 2 trees 50m apart grown from seeds 13 years ago. The front one started bearing after 7 years one fruit to the size of a rockmelon and then fell off during draught. Since then, it only bears male flowers. The back has been bearing for the last 3 years.

Susan, Jak pulp texture is variable from years to years. My back tree bore mushy pulp for the first 2 years and then it bore crunchy pulp 3rd year. I have heard that seedlings grown from crunch seeds can bear mushy pulp.

Amanda no jackfruit has a combination of all the best characteristics like low latex, high flesh yield, good taste, prolific production etc.Galaxy may have a bit of the milky way and might not be outa this world but it has a good flavour, thick flesh and yields early and well.

I am not sure how it will go here Mike - it gets pretty cold (but maybe that's just me as I am not acclimatised yet! Loads of gorgeous rain down here tho...what a welcome change..)

It will be a good experiment if nothing else - another test for how far south a sub tropical will go (in WA anyway) as I haven't come across anyone growing them south of Perth yet...

Wyn, in the box saying "plant search", type in Jakfruit and enter. You will then see what plants are available or in production. With the limited amount of experience I've had with Jakfruit, I've found the crisp ones to be a little less crisp if allowed to ripen some more, soft ones always soft unless unripe. All of the nursery details should be found under the heading "contact".
