Kaffir Lime tree (forum)

Hi folks,
Would anyone be able to tell me why my kaffir lime tree will not set fruits and the leaves are mostly yellow, although there are some green leaves from the spring growth. It seems to be a slow grower; had this since 2004 and it is still about 3/4 metre in height and l metre in width. I use the green leaves to make chillie paste and also to make a "tea" drink once in a while.
Thanks for any help from anyone.
Best regards.
Jo

Mine is not looking terrific; it's in a pot and we've had a lot of rain in Sydney.

Compared to my tahitian lime my kaffir is doing very well with lots of fruit. They were planted at the same time, but I think kaffirs really love sandy soils like Perth`s as long as they are well fed & in full sun. Our winters dont bother ours either.
Maybe try a sandier potting mix, MaryT with lots of chicken manure pellets!

Thanks for the tip, snottiegobble. All my trees need feeding after all that rain as they are in pots. :)

Jo, perhaps it is deficient in some minerals and citrus are very hungry ESP when in pot. They are easily deficient in iron and magnesium. I don't usually want my kaffir lime to flower and fruit and will remove them when I see them cos they aren't not much use. Do you use the fruits?

Hi AuOrey,
Thanks for the tips on the mineral deficiency; will put some on them. It is grown on the ground and does not seem to grow taller. Oh, I have no chance to use the fruits as they dropped off all the time. I would love to have them as they are good to make drinks, sauces for chillie paste (home made), etc.

Thanks for the tips guys, I use the leaves but have been letting the fruit fall thinking it was too aromatic to eat. My tree produces a lot of fruit so will try the marmalade and sauce for chilli paste.

Mine get a bit bigger than golf balls and yellow a bit before they drop.I use the skin in soups and with chicken or fish. They seem to have fruit for about half the year here and are very productive.

I love the fruit. You only use the zest, but it's magic stuff.
My little tree is in a pot, and has lots of flowers. When it start a fruiting, do you have and advice to get big fruit?

bigger pot to let it grow into a bigger plant and thin some of the fruits, so that the all of the plant's energy goes into a select few.

Mike I'm sure the kaffir lime is 'at home' in Cairns but the rest of us have to be a bit kinder to it though it felt like Cairns in Sydney the last few days. Today's maximum is 23
