Killing ivy growing on a wooden fence. (forum)

Hayden starts with ...
I have been trying to kill the huge ivy growth on my wooden fence. It's roots are on the other side of the fence and I don't get along with the neighber there. I'm going to put some new plants there but anything I do plant gets strangled. Does anyone know of any cheap or free techniques for getting rid of it.???

I have huge amounts of ivy in my rental garden. I have found that actually pulling it out seems to work best, but that might not be very easy with it growing through a neighbours wooden fence as it could well damage it...
Glyphosate doesn't seem to work on mine :(

I've been pulling it of the fence but It takes alot of time. It's pulling the whole fence down!! It grows along about 6m of our fence and is very thick and killing my climbing rose.

Hey it is the same answer as on the tree killing thread. Grazon Extra or Access. Both chemicals contain triclopyr and picloram, the access is one that you mix with diesel and apply to the trunk, and the Grazon is the one you mix with water and spray on the foliage. Many a tree has died of "mysterious disease" from these chemicals.......Neighbours should really think of the consequenses to neighbours of such invasive things grown on fences.

Access is around the $100 mark, and it dilutes with 8 litres of diesel, so makes 9 litres all up. Only a small amout gets used to kill a big tree. Cheap if the neighbours offending tree is going to distroy thousands of dollars worth of septics, pavers or fence! In WA it is available from Agricultural retail stores such as Landmark, Elders, CRT etc. Don't think Bunnings keep it.

Hayden, How did you go with killing the ivy? We have neighbour's ivy coming under, over and through our colorbond fence. They do nothing in the garden and have not responded to pleas for help in getting rid of it, despite it killing all their backyard trees.

I cut all of the vine of at the thick roots through the fence. There were 6!!! They haven't complained so I don't think they've noticed as they don't go in the garden at all or they don't care. Pulled all of the ivy of the fence as I was worried it could grow without roots in the ground.
