large water melon (forum)

grub starts with ...
all my melon are on the large side this year ,heres one of my water melons i have picked i still have one thats larger this one weighed in at 22.7kg's i have another 12 all ready at the same time .lucky the kids like water melons.

Hey grub, is that a heirloom variety? or seeds from the local garden centre? I have trouble growing them here near the coast, but I have one beauty nearly ready, not as big as your one. I can always live in hope. My heirloom variety I'm growing looks the same as your's pictured.

it's a CAROLINA old style melon.
i also have some large MOUNTAIN HOOSIER melon down the other side of my block and some moon and stars the nicest tasting melon i have is the rattle snake
they are all heirlooms

i didnt do anything speical i just added blood and bone when i planted them.
they are in a new patch were my cows were last year and there was plenty of cow pattys turned into the soil lol

I grow a lot of watermelons but I don't risk the bigger ones with our shorter season here in Southern Vic. I suggest everyone grows 'orangeglo' but the trouble with growing that one is that you will never want to eat another variety again. It is the best tasting watermelon you can get in my opinion - I used to hate watermelon until I tasted that one.

gidday john here are some of my moon and stars the small one is 9.8 and the large one is 20.2
the large from yesterday's photo is a 35 kg carolina, i have a long my too go before i reach the 87kg but ill keep trying.
my giant pumpkin that i grow last year only maxed out a 82 kgs still smaller than the water melon.
i must be doing something wrong... lol

BJ have you ever seen that add "oils ain't oils" same with growing things, it depends on how you do it.

KK is obviously a watermelon specialist and grows great tasting watermelons. Because I can't grow watermelons very well my 'orangeglo' would probably taste like crap compared to his. Get KK's growing secrets before you get the seeds. :-]

I use drip retic etc. Maybe I am too close to the ocean and it's a humidity thing - is it like that for u too Wayne?

Because the wet weather this summer caused my melon patch to turn to a swamp, my watermelons all died so I won't have any seeds this year. I get seeds from 'baker creek seeds' they are in the US but they have a great variety of melon seeds.

Just letting you know, my late father used to grow 'Klondike' watermelons, they were huge and the best tasting watermelons! He planted them in rotted cow manure, sugar mill mud.
Does anyone have any seeds?
