Lesser dung flies (forum)

Hi

I have recently added compost and blood and bone to my citrus trees, and now have an infestation of what I believe to be "lesser dung flies" (small, black, ant like flies).

Can you please tell me:

is this normal?
will they harm my trees?
and should I try and get rid of them (and if so, how?)?

Thanks in advance
Bronwyn

Whenever you have organic matter breaking down you will have flies.
Better to place a layer of mulch over the compost than to use it as a mulch.
Provided they aren't fruit fly, they wont do any damage to your citrus.

There are dozens of species of small flies that pitch in to break down organic matter in compost heaps. They are helpers. You might notice thge fungus gnats around rotten fruit. You won't see the nasty Dacus and Bactrocera fruit flies buzzing around compost.

Thanks so much Mike and Chris for your responses. They seem to have dropped back in numbers now. There is sugar cane mulch over the compost, but it didnt seem to slow them down :-)
