Live in Melbourne, when do I plant? (forum)

Hi everyone. I am new to gardening and want to harvest (strawberries, blueberries, tomatoes, cucumbers, chilli, okra, rosella) when is the best time to sow? Should I start from seed or runner/cutting?

Hi, strawberries and blueberries are faster if grown from plants, ie runners.
Tomatoes, cucumbers, chilli, okra and rosella can be started from seed when it warms up in August. They can also be grown from small plants in punnets. This will be faster. Growing from seed offers more types, if you can find them. There might be 10 types of tomato in punnets at the nursery, but many more available as seed. Same for other crops. If you are looking for any special or traditional types of vegetable, seed is a great way to grow unusual or hard to find types.

If you want to start your own seeds a heat mat and mini greenhouse helps.

I don’t bother and just direct sow

You're fine to plant cucumbers and tomatoes now, but try to get them in before the end of September, or they may not get enough growing time. I recommend multiple varieties to spread out the harvest.

Berries, like strawberries or blueberries can be planted at any time, but wont fruit normally till later in the year (normally, I did eat one alpine strawberry from a bush in my garden today).

If you plant blueberries, get at least 2 different (but compatable) varieties, to get cross polination, or you will have low yields.

Starting from seeds or seedlings works fine. For bushes like blueberries I find young plants are easier, as it gets you ahead on growth, and the first year the plant produces little or nothing, and doesn't get good crops till 3 years old. This site has a very useful pollination chart to show compatible varieties, and sells a good selection.

The diggers club tend to have a lot of good vegetable and fruit seeds to grow in Melbourne. Find their website to order seeds.
