Macadamia nut trees (forum)

7 responses

Deb starts with ...
I planted 2 macadamia nut trees in the ground on my southern victorian coastal property in June 03 which I originally grew from the nuts of my parents tree (Albury, NSW). In all the time they've been planted I'm lucky if they've grown two inches. Mum and dad say they take years to "take off" but how long do I have to wait (it's 9 years now)? Any idea how I can help them grow would be very gratefully appreciated. Sorry, no picture available. Thanks in anticipateion.

Hey Deb, 2 inches in 9 years is painfully slow for a macadamia. Here in Wollongong on the southcoast of Sydney Id expect them to grow almost a meter per year. I find them pretty fast growing and take off almost straight away.

Id suggest buying a couple of new plants and trying again. Plant them in a slight mound of good potting mix mixed through with some compost and mulch well. Feed a couple times a year with compost or well rotted manure.

Hope this helps,

Rich

Hi Rich, thanks for the help but I really want to grow these trees 'cause they're from my parent's trees (it's a family thing). And sorry, its 6 not 9 years. However, I'll try with these plants what you suggested. Thanks again for your help.
Cheers
Deb

Hey Deb ... you may also want to protect them when they are young from the wind and cold weather during the cooler time of year.

Good luck!

Hi Vicki,
Try giving it some potassium (K) fertilizer.
Mine gets the 'nut borer' as well, so I have to spray with a copper spray with insecticide added.
Might be time to give it a prune also.

Thanks Brendan,
Will fertilize and prune (will need a big ladder!!). Hoping to see a happier tree and more fruit maybe next year.
