Macadamia nuts (forum)

Graham Macklin starts with ...
I have a grafted macadamia nut tree which I planted approx. 9 months ago. Initially growth was ok but for about the last 6 months the leaves have turned a very light shade of green and any new growth/tips appear to be burnt/wind burnt. Water is not a problem as we have had our fair share of rain in recent times.About 2 months ago the tree was given a dose of Trace Elements. Can you plesae help or make some suggestions. Thank you.

Thanks Jimmy. The Qld Dept. of Primary Industries has recommended Iron Chelate and also Dynamic Lifter so I'll see what results they bring.

Hi Amanda,
I was always told that a fertilizer high in phosphorus will kill a Qld Nut tree (aka macadamia:-), and even Aussie gum trees.

I'm careful not to give mine too much 'P'. As they are a rain-forest tree, they like a good drink tho. (don't we all?:-)

Hello Amanda,
I try to give mine some fertilizer every 2 months. I use something like 'organic booster', which is low in phosphorus & potassium, and just add some sulphate of potash. Mine bears like mad.

Just check that your blood & bone doesn't have too much phosphorus, it usually does. Yates B & B has an NPK of 8:5:1, which is fairly high in 'P', that's why I don't use it on my macadamia tree.

Search top right of this forum for Macadamia Tree, some info there.

For the yellow leaves, try some epsom salts, one handful per sq metre under the canopy, and water in.

Is the tree mulched? They are a rainforest tree, and love mulch.

Also, to speed things up, mix 30g epsom salts to 4

Phos toxicity on natives can produce yellow leaves also...

Annie57 yes they are one of those native plants that don't like excessive phosphorus, so it might be a bit much in the chook yard depending on chook density. A bit of composted poultry manure seems OK- loads of fresh maybe not. Mine are not too far from the chook yard and going well. Could also be climate if you don't live in SEQ or something else
