Macadamia pollination (forum)

I have a Macadamia Tetraphylla which is 8 years old, growing well, flowers but with no nuts. It needs a pollinator. Should this be another tetraphylla or is a integritfolia pollinator also possible? Thanks for any advice? Andy

Tetraphylla is grown from seed, and can take 8-10 yrs to set nuts (from experience). As far as I know, this species has no cultivars and still retains the name "bush nut", and is self-pollinating. The newer commercial varieties based on Integrifolia have more of an issue with needing cross-pollination. If you still choose to get a second plant, successful pollination can be achieved by either variety.

Hi VF I replied at the time with a thank you that never appeared... You do know your maccas. So thanks again for your advice. I was 1 or 2 years too impatient apparently. Interesting that M.Tetraphylla has no cultivars while Integrifolia has many.

No problem Andy, although I'm hardly an expert - I just used to play around with them on my parents farm many years ago. I think that Tetraphylla is not cultivated as the nuts are lower in fat and higher in sugar, making them harder to process and less tasty - they are yummier to eat raw though. BTW, when they start setting nuts, don't expect many for the first couple of years.
