I also bought some of these from the same farmer in bundaberg. He said they were banana mangoes. They were smaller than I thought banana mangoes would be average weight is 120grams

I have some of those mangoes as well from a friend's place. Banana mango means, 'I don't know what these yellow elongated mangoes are'.

a lot of American mangos are descendants of Turpentine mango, hence there will be some turpyness to it.

American mangos tend to have more colour - i.e. the reds, apparently, their market preference is colour.

I think the Palmers are mono - they are grown in qld due to being a later season variety. I think the banana could be poly, so maybe worth growing. from seed. Though a lot of mangos are called banana, it a really common name.

Mike Tr says...
The monos are usually more colourful, originated from India and often have a little hydrocarbon taint. These are the main ancestors of new world mangoes. Polys of SE Asian origin are usually less colourful, sweeter, grow true to type and are preferred in Australia. They are pretty mixed up now with crossing and the KP being a colourful poly reputedly from India doesn't fit the pattern.
Palmers are a late mono from Florida and are exceptionally ordinary in quality.

Are banana mango generally large trees? The experience of eating one is much better when I let them get very ripe.

On another note. I have a small Alison red tree with 5 fruit on it even though they are only the size of small lemons they have red blush on the stem end and today they gave a little when I squeezed them so must be time to come off the tree?

Palmer has been recommended for colder areas as it can repeat bloom until conditions are good enough to set a crop. Downside is it's not particularly good.

I ate some of the green mango pictured above and they were yummy. I might comb through some inala fruit shops for Asian mangoes I hear they are usually around those parts. I was in templex nursery today and they have large potted mangoes with fruit on them including nam doc Mai.

gimme, I've also wondered whether it's the scion of the mango that determine the size or the rootstock that determines the size. So far, the consensus is the scion but there are people working on dwarfing mango rootstocks. Jury is still out.

You can always grow the banana mangos in pots and see where that takes you.

And also, you wouldn't happen to be at Yuen's at sunnybank? I think I tried those mangos a year ago and they were terrible. Luck of the draw I guess.

Have found some 4 yrs ago some Asian mangoes imported from Taiwan. Now have a healthy 2m seedling waiting for it to flower. Leaves are very narrow and long, also very dark green. The mango was large elongated with a yellow base colour with red blush on one side ,very good eating.Have not seen it since, and believe me ive been looking.

Brain, yes it might have been yuens not sure though..? I know daleys use Bowen rootstock even for dwarf mango like Irwin. I only wonder how banana mango would perform because i have a lot of seed and they take half the effort to get the seed out compared to larger mangoes. If common is ok to use Banana should be fine too. From what I have read in studies on different rootstocks, I don't think the effect on yield, canopy etc... would be noticeable to the home grower.
