Best Wishes to you all.

I have just harvested some japoticabas from my tree and some of those is as big as a 50cents or 20 cents. I highly recommend everyone to have a jaboticaba tree in Melbourne. If you give your tree enough water and fertilizer you would have at least 2 crops of beautiful fruits per year in about 2 or 3 year time.

Hi VF, Amanda, John, Mike and Jaboticaba tree owners.

I bought my seedling tree from Daleys and early stage of growing, I did nothing until one day I saw some flowers appeared on the tree but no fruit set (I gave it nothing at the time).

I decided to set up a water irrigation and gave it lots of organic Camellia fertilizer + potash in October and April, the tree then took off.

I often get very big fruits every year. Jab tree loves water so much, flowers are on my tree quite often but Melbourne weather is unpredictable so fruit set normally occurs only twice a year in December and March.

BTW, mine is a small type with no name. It has been in a bit of shady corner.

My neighbor 's tree bought at 1 m tall seedling, took 3 years to fruit. She gives her tree lots of water and Dynamic lifter and mulch well.

I think Potash would help if you have advanced trees in your case Amanda and John. Good luck.

ivepeters and david - the purple mangosteen is going alright. still growing, but has a bit of yellowing to new leaves. it looks a bit chlorotic or similar. Perhaps the trace sodium in the baby bath water is hurting it. i'll switch to tank only for a few months now. i'm hoping to push a fair bit of growth this summer if i can get the micronutrients right.

Jujube - my large leaf jaboticaba has recently started fruiting and is fantastic and large. i also have recently tasted white jaboticabas, which are even better than the black and red types when fully ripe. I've recently added seedlings of these and precocious hybrid jaboticabas to my backyard team as they are all so darn yummy!

May your jabs fruit well for many more years!

Ta Jujube - interesting info there - can I annoy you for the pH of the soil next to their roots (pretty please? :D ...I am still too nervous with my Jab's perhaps - although - they have had a big feed of pig poo which most of my plants love - except the Lychee also, strangely. They are doing fine and maybe I need to be more patient - it's only been in the last week or so that the Wampee's have finally shot away and the Kwai Muk is budding out...the weather is finally heating up so I guess they are enjoying this (even if I am not ;-)

When I planted my trees here they all got rock dust, dynamic lifter, pig poo and soil solver (kaolin clay) and a rotten-wood soil conditioner (or fine coir) - all worked into the soil/sandy loam before hand.

I am working on a good cross section of nice non-water repellant organic matter also...

BJ I have one surviving red hybrid jab and one vexator jab.Luckily I have some sprouting seeds of M.trunciflora.If I count the arse-dragging trashy yellow that would be 3 species to join the 3 I have.Cambuca is really a jaboticaba as well so that is another.
Amanda burnt tips on leaves is common with jabs if there are chlorine excesses.

Hi Amanda,

I will get the PH kit out and test the soil of my tree later today and let you know.

I think you have done extremely well with your trees considering of being in the new place for less than a year. Keep on good work. You will have plenty of fruits very soon.

One more thing I would like to add is my jab tree has been planted in a higher end of a slightly sloping ground (20cm) and all grass clippings or falling leaves are going toward the tree.

I notice that Mike 's VERY PRODUCTIVE trees are in a much high ground, the same as the ones I have seen in QLD. Perhaps well drainage and acidic soil may be the key in growing these jab trees.

Hi Jantina
It was nice to meet you and welcome you in my garden a couple of years ago. The garden is much of a mess these days. I must work harder.

Great - thanks Jujube :) Mike - trees doing much better down here now - only have rain and bore water (no scheme hooked up at all) and it's not salty (just a fair bit of iron)
You are spot on about the chlorine I reckon...I think this may be why so many of the plants are struggling in Perth?...they go just like mine did in the ground and on scheme in Gero...yellow leaves and burnt margins and tips..eventually they hardly grow at all (and the leaves get smaller) and then the leaves start to fall off....it's a long slow death.

I also agree with you about the form of nitrogen they get too. It was good to hear what jujube uses...I haven't seen organic camellia fertiliser b4 - so I must have a look - that was nice to know jujube :)

(ps - I have also grown a rampant watermelon vine to cover up the ground all underneath and around mine - for summer - a natural mulch which should help to keep the soil/root run cooler and provide humudity in our dry heatwaves I hope...)

Hi Amanda,

I am not sure how long it takes, some experts out there will answer that question for you.

I would just collect some aging pine needles in your local area if you could find and spread a thick layer on top of the soil of the jab tree to lower PH if you have too. Organic matter or falling leaves will work too.

Hi Lucy

I must be living on an old sand hill as it's dry white sand which is very hard to wet and doesn't hold water.

It would take me a whole day to water every plant in the garden and by the next day it would be just as dry again so it's not practical to water them all. Have tried all kinds of mulches and wetting agents but still no solution.

I have 2 yellow ones which I intend to keep in pots. The ones in the ground I will leave there as they are slowly growing bigger.

I'm not sure if Jaboticabas are really suited to Melbourne's conditions because according to the Cape Tribulation tropical website, yes they do have high water requirement, and in cooler climates with light frosts the crops become reduced each year.

Red Jaboticaba Wanted!

Hi Lucy, thinking about your idea of growing Jaboticabas in pots, it seems that the red hybrid type would be more suitable for pots than the normal type owing to it's compact size. The fruit is supposed to be far superior as well.

This is some information I got from another site about Red Jaboticabas:

Here's the advantage..

Dwarf tree...8ft max

Thinner skin, less tanic, very palatable skin unlike the regular sabara

Bears much earlier at 3-5 yrs from seed as opposed to 6-12 for sabara.

Bears many more crops and is almost everbearing. sabara makes 5 crops approx red makes over 10 crops, 4 are heavy.

Easily kept in a pot for decades, as is sabara, but dwarf is better

Finally, the tree is very beautiful and more eye-catching than the regular with
fruits flowers or buds almost always present , unlike the much less actively
fruiting sabara

The problem now is where to get it. I wonder if anyone in Australia is already growing it so I could get some cuttings or seeds. Thanks.
