Moorpark Apricot Tree Still Has Some Leaves? (forum)

4 responses

My Moorpark Apricot tree (only just bought from nursery a couple months ago - would be 2-3yrs old were I to hazzard a guess), still has a handful of leaves on the tallest central branch, which I will be pruning back to shape the tree as this has not been done while in the nursery - is this normal? All my other desiduous trees are bare already, as is the remainder of this tree...
I live in SA. Not sure if that makes a difference?
Thank you in advance :)

Hello,
I'm in my first year of growing deciduous fruit trees, and some trees just seem to hold leaves into winter. I don't think it's really a problem. I had some late holders on a Golden Delicious apple. Good a good frost and they all dropped in the next few days. I'm writing two weeks on from your post. Have the leaves fallen yet?
Robert

Hi Rob,
Thanks for the reply. It has two leaves left now following the frost we had. They are slowly falling. I'm curious to see how long it takes for the last leaf to drop.

Do you grow apricots at all? I just planted mine and I know you're typically supposed to prune right back at the time of planting, but I've also read apricots are not in favour of being pruned in winter as they're susceptible to disease and fungus more than other stone fruits.
So do I prune anyway? Or wait until just before Spring?

Thanks again,
L

Hello,
Yes, I have two apricots, planted back in a bout december, and I am awaiting another one (bare root) in the mail.
As for pruning, definitely prune in winter, just be sure to seal the cuts with a pruning paste or spray, to prevent infection.
Happy Gardening,
Robert

Respectfully disagree. Wounds heal faster in Spring so apricots are recommended to be pruned in Spring to prevent fungal infections.
There’s no evidence that wound sealers etc work.
