Mosquitos trap in the garden (forum)

Anonymous starts with ...
Here is a cut and past I came accros about a mozzie trap. Anyone use them? Is the science right?
If they work Im thinking of making them out of 20lt paint drums.

HOMEMADE MOSQUITO TRAP:
Items needed:
1 cup of water
1/4 cup of brown sugar
1 gram of yeast
1 2-liter bottle

HOW:
1. Cut the plastic bottle in half.
2. Mix brown sugar with hot water. Let cool. When cold, pour in the bottom half of the bottle.
3. Add the yeast. No need to mix. It creates carbon dioxide, which attracts mosquitoes.
4. Place the funnel part, upside down, into the other half of the bottle, taping them together if desired.
5. Wrap the bottle with something black, leaving the top uncovered, and place it outside in an area away from your normal gathering area. (Mosquitoes are also drawn to the color black.)

Change the solution every 2 weeks for continuous control.

It just occurred to me that the bait in the trap is very like the stuff used in home made traps for fruit fly.

Maybe the black cover makes a difference?

Sounds like a con job. Mosquitoes are attracted to even minute amounts of CO2 and there are commercial traps made with this attractant (expensive). If I have mozzies in the house at night then I turn off all the lights at and turn on the light in the bathroom; then I light the gas heater which generates CO and CO2. The mozzies find it irresistable. When they are all present I shut the door and spray insecticide.

I bought one of these and it is fantastic for the price. My neighbour has the expensive kind (however this does not come with a co2 attractant as mine does) and it does not work nearly as well in attracting females.

I have heard that placing pools of water with Bti in them kills the larvae. Apparently, for that matter it is very successful however, I have my doubts on its efficacy.

Mosquitoes are attracted by water and of course Co2. They bite before laying eggs. They can travel for miles for a dinner.

Do local traps work?
