Moving to Tasmania (forum)

Bass starts with ...
My friend in Queensland has 3 fig trees growing in containers. She'll be moving to Tasmania in fw months. Is she able to move her trees with her or ship them to Tasmania?
What is the process of exporting these trees there?

hi bass,
we also moved from qld to tas a few years ago (then back again a few years later)but werent allowed to take any of our plants with us. tas has a pretty strict quarrantine system and usually no plants are allowed in unless you are some kind of business importing large quantities from a source thats on their list of approved sources. check it out with the DPIWE (you'd have to google to get their contact details), but i dont think its allowed, or may be hugely expensive if it is. shame, the figs look great

hi again bass,
not sure how well figs grow in tas as we never grew them. according to the diggers website they should grow there. they do mail order and will post to tas. where is your friend moving to in tas. the east coast and launceston generally is a bit warmer in summer so figs may be better suited there, but if you love figs i guess they could be grown in a glass house to keep them warm!

Figs should do well in Tasmania. I grow them here in Pennsylvania, USA where the temperatures drops to -25 C in winters. Figs need protection when temperatures are below -12 C. I normally wrap my fig trees for added protection and they do fine, with minor die back.
She's moving to Hobart region.

Quarantine will not allow any plant matter into Tasmania at all. I had to leave behind a beautiful Maranta plant and my Dads memorial Peace Rose...very strict, but very understandable.
