Mystery tree (forum)

I have an old orchard in an historic goldfields home in Vctoria. In it is this mystery (to me) tree. Leaves a bit like pear, and a very hard, oval shaped yellow fruit covered in a mossy like brown fur. Fruit around the size of a small pear. Any ideas what it is, and what i can do with the fruit?
