They are fruits, about the size of an egg. Grow on a scrambling ground vine. Look like they are in the Cucurbitaceae family.

Looks very much like what we call pig melon over here. If it is, it needs pulling up and disposing of as it IS a weed. Over here it grows on the side of the road!

Thanks Dekka,
I looked these up,

Wikiepedia says
Seeds of the manroot are large, hard, and very smooth. Southern California Manroot has larger, longer seeds that the other manroot species except for Marah horridus. Fruit usually hold 4 or more seeds.

These fruits have lots of seeds, like a regular cucumber. It could be variation, it is definitely a wild cucumber of some sort.

Kath, I found this picture of "Marah horridus" that looks very similar to yours.

Also googled 'wild cucumber' and found a similar one in green but no more info other than it was photographed in Mexico...not much help.

Yes, places like diggers sell the seed, you can't bring it into WA, but why would you when you could grow a normal cucumber.

John, my neighbours weed is not the same as the plant the diggers sell, they sell seeds from the African Horned Melon - Cucumis metuliferus
Also called the African Horned Cucumber
Which looks like this.
I think my neighbours weed is a wild cucumber of some sort and I am not going to try eating it.
