Nagami Cumquat not productive ? (forum)

Fos starts with ...
Help Ideas please ? I have a Nagami Cumquat. had for almost 3 1/3 years - no flowers or fruit. It is healthy but has not grown much, fertilized & water regularly & full sun. Bought as a grafted advanced tree we had it in the ground first then trans planted to a pot last year no problem. We hoped to shock into flower but still nothing ?

Patience, Fos. I have one that's also stubborn but last season I had one, yes one fruit :) I blame it on the disappearance of bees but my other citrus are producing reasonable crops.

Thanks Mary, yippee... must have been exciting to see a fruit on yours. That's encouraging,I will persevere. My husband thinks it's a dud but I think it will come good. The rest of my citrus are flowering & fruiting abundantly too. - some much younger than the cumquat-(at a guess it's 7yrs old) So I am baffled not even a flower.

My cumquat did really well till a few years ago, then just stopped flowering and fruiting. I stopped watering it summer before last, then took pity on it when I set up new irrigation line, and watered it last summer.

It is now so loaded with fruit I don't know what to do with it all!

Hi Julie, ...mmmm... maybe I won't water mine this summer coming & see how it goes ? Any chance of a photo of your tree ? Yum...marmalade sounds good - bottled whole in a liqueur syrup or cumquat cake maybe ?

I could supply the whole of Perth with marmalade with the amount of fruit I've got! I do make some, but it hardly puts a dent.

I do fancy making some candied cumquats to give away at Christmas though - dipped in chocolate?

My tree is covered too ( in a pot, had for a couple of years). I am going to pick them in a week or two and try to candy them whole. I worked with a french girl a few years ago in the uk. She went home and bought back what I assume were candied cumquats. They were amazing!

What about the seeds though? If they are left whole they will be full of them. Don't want to give people fruit where they have to spit out seeds.

Don't mind myself. Any ideas people? If I cut them to remove the seeds they will probably lose a lot of juice in cooking. Won't they? Never done it.

Re cumquat juice - I meant that they would lose juice into the water, rather than remain in the fruit. Am I making sense?

Fingers crossed, Julie. Re cumquat; if you are speaking of candied fruit, it's quite ok to cut them and take out the seeds. You can return the juice to the syrup; shouldn't matter. They're meant to take up the syrup to be 'candied'. Here's a simple recipe:
