Does anyone have any naranjilla cuttings to spare. I'm willing to pay or trade for some plants.

I have a few seedlings that have come up in the polyhouse Nick. I meant to have pulled them out already. I wont be growing them again because the fruit, no matter how ripe, is just so insipid, astringent, call it what you want they are just too bitter, not nice at all, fresh out of hand. Apparently they make a refreshing juice but it would need so much sugar I didnt bother.
Anyway if you still want to try it I can cut you off some cuttings of a huge bush I have up the back, they strike very easily.

John Mc - thanks for that info...has anyone else found the same with Naranjilla?
I was wanting to have a go with these - only because of the great reviews on how "delicious" they are (from Diggers site)
I find it really annoying when a fruit is nothing like what it is claimed to be - as growing the plant/tree up to fruiting stage is a lot of time, work and money that I can't afford, at least, especially in my climate. :-(

Oh, Daleys describes them as a delicacy in South America with a delicious juice. But I'll still take some cuttings for my greenhouse solanum collection. :)

Also hows the fruit off the the huge bush John? The reason im asking is that the bad taste might be because they are seedlings and are variable. To nick: im guessing that the plant you got off diggers was also seed-grown because i've found that they sell a lot of seedling stock. I'm probably wrong but that could be the case.

I just tried one after a Miracle fruit berry. Wasn't too bad. It's the only way I'd ever eat another Naranjilla. Sorta gives it a Fejoa-eri like taste after the sourness is removed. Those miracle fruits are really that, Miracles.

I bought two plants from two different sources. One variation had less thorns than the other and bitter, while the other was all thorns and super bitter.

How disappointing when I have been nursing my naranjilla along for about two years. You win some , you lose some, or as kert would say, some fruits are meant to be rare for a reason!

Great pics John Mc!? what a sorry looking thing - it would hate it here then :))) Thanks for the feedback guys - I'd rather use my precious water on a more reputable fruiting candidate! :)

Hi all,

I have to agree. Although the diggers book says they reputedly make a delicious juice, the only picture they have is a tiny seedling in a sheltered spot next to a house, and I suspect that those Victorians have never tasted one (they also say they don't know how to get it to fruit and they might be dioecious- so obviously they didn't grow them successfully when they wrote that).

I agree that they are sour. They taste a bit like a sour tamarillo / cape gooseberry with a tough skin (I have three plants, all the same). Also the spines and irritating hairs all over the plant are annoying. After cutting mine back and propping them up, I had an irritated throat from breathing the hairs and a rash on my arms. Next time I will wear long sleeves and a mask.

Next time I have any time to spend in the garden and it isn't raining, I think I will cut them right back, pot the stumps, and give them away to anyone who wants them at BOGI.

Nick, while growing up they are very ornamental. I might even save a couple for the flower garden for conversation pieces. As for growing them for fruit I don't think it's worth it, IMHO.
Here's a nice pic before the heat.
