Nutgrass (forum)

Clancy starts with ...
Seeking advice on how to rid my beds of nutgrass. When I moved to Tumbulgum I found a small amount of nutgrass in the lawns though the vege gardens seemed relatively free of it. I was wrong. Help - any ideas please. I can hardly put a finger between the nutgrass in my garden beds and I don't like chemicals though maybe I have to clean it up and abandon that soil for a period of time?

Clancy, get yourself some &quote;Sedgehammer&quote; herbicide from Bunnings. You wont get rid of it otherwise. It is expensive but it works! It cleared my garden beds of NG 3 years ago and it is only now that I see the nut grass starting to find its way back in to the beds.

Wont damage your other grass

Not a quick way, but if you keep pulling the leaves out (pulling it up or hoeing) so it can't photosynthesize it will get thinner and less vigorous, and eventually use up its stored starch. It depends how much you have. Chooks will eat the grass you pull up if you have any. I am doing this and it is working- it's not dominating my garden beds any more at all.

Hey thank you Mick for that advice; just one more, will it be safe to plant vegetables back in those beds or should I move the food gardens elsewhere away from where I use the Sedgehammer?

Clancy,it targets nutgrass in commercial crops of sugar cane, corn and other crops including turf. I used it in the veggie garden by painting it onto individual blades with a brush leaving the ground fallow until I had eradicated the ng.

It is pretty toxic to poultry and other livestock and the instruction leaflet outlines safety measures.

To be cautious you probably should read the leaflet prior to purchase.
