Where are you? If the mangos were irradiated the seeds may not grow.

Attention Mark, Musing about Mangoes!
Musing about the Chaunsa you brought over for me to try, I can't say it would be one of my favourite mangoes as it was too sickly sweet and cloying for my liking although that may have been due to it's being too stale. By the way, the seed kernel inside when I opened it was rotted.
I went and got another one of these Pakistan mangoes from a shop in Springvale and it was totally different. It was a different brand, imported by a different company and the flavour was nothing like that one you got. Much, much better with an unusual somewhat exciting taste like no other mango that I have ever tasted. Now I 'm left wondering if they were were completely different varieties and if so, which one was the real Chaunsa?

Hey Mark. Hope you get more than just fun with them. Fingers crossed :)
Curiosity demands I ask if you opened the husks and saw if the seeds are poly?

Linton - I think they are actually an Alphonso type - did the one you got have a name??
Brad - seed is Mono - im just seeing if it will germinate - may not even bother growing as have an Alphoso about to flower at present.

There are two sub types of chunsa . White chunsa that has somewhat light yellow stiff pulp and black chunsa that has darker yellowish orange pulp that become soft very quickly. I think the black chunsa is more sweeter but not good for export. I found only white Chunsa here in Sydney. Btw chunsa means "to suck" onto and if you want to enjoy is real taste there is a special way how to make it soft and juicy and then squeeze it to drink the juice directly from top of mango. In pakistan ppl don't cut chunsa mango to eat :).

Attention Mark - please confirm that you got the Chaunsa seeds to sprout and method used. Mine have all rotted now so it is not possible that they can still germinate. I think that the seeds I extracted were already dead and therefore rotted, probably due to the fruit being irradiated which would have killed them, right?
However, the Gomera mango seedling grown from the freshly picked fruit is still powering along at 6 weeks old, even in the middle of winter. See below....

Hi guys, sorry to bomb your thread but, I am keen to try to grow some mangoes in Victoria. I have heard that tha Gomera variety is the most cold tolerant known. Is there somewhere to purchase tree or seeds for this variety? I'd love to try it.
Many thanks

Hi Mark, how did the Chaunsa seed go? I've finally got mine in soil, it's been sitting in water over winter on the window sill, I hope it germinates!

Idreesma - mango is too small still in pot to cut scions but Daleys has this available from time to time - mine was from them.

Hello Farouk,
Very interested to hear that one of your seeds is growing. My experience is the same as Mark's - the seeds rot, presumably because the imported fruit is irradiated which kills the seeds. So I would be interested to hear from you as to how the seed is progressing.
