I am very happy with my Daley's papaya trees. I have a lot of fruit fly in my yard and want to protect the growing fruit on my young trees. What is the best way? The fruit is about 30 mm now.
Thanks,
Joe Clark

I have never had a problem with fruit fly on my papayas Joe, they don't seem to touch them. I think that if they were to strike they wouldn't do so until the fruit started to yellow.
My problem is possums so I wrapped them with hessian

Thanks Wayne. That makes sense as they don't ripen until you get them inside.

Hi
I just wanted to ask what is a good papaya variety to grow?
I am thinking of growing it in a greenhouse in my backyard so a dwarf variety is probably better but im not sure how tall they grow.
Also whats the difference between a paw paw and a papaya, or are they the same?
Thanks
Steven

Looks like one of these is just what you're after:
http://www.daleysfruit.com.au/blog/2007/05/4-month-old-paw-paw-cutting-grown.html
I'm trying to grow some from cuttings myself.
BTW, we aussies call them paw paw, the rest of the world call them papaya. America has it's own unrelated fruit called a paw paw, a bit of info here about them here:

cheers

Good info there John Mc, some like to call the red pawpaw, 'papaya' for the ease of recognition.
For what's it's worth Steven, I would be enclined to buy them where you are rather than try grow them.

Thanks for the info John. i thought they were the same fruit but i wasnt sure (people like making things confusing sometimes dont they :))
They look like they grow pretty big so it might be too big for the greenhouse but its definetly something to think about as they make heaps of fruit!
The papayas you buy here are awful! ive never been interested in them until i went to Vanuatu last year and our tour guide picked one fresh off the tree and it was beautiful! the ones here have no flavour at all and they all look sick!
From my experience tropical trees can tolerate Melbournes climate quite well but they obviously dont grow as vigorously so its worth a shot!
Regards
Steven

Steven,
I agree with you about the paw paws available in Melbourne. They're tasteless! I grew up in Brisbane and used to eat paw paw for breakfast nearly every day. How I miss a decent, sweet, juicy, tasty paw paw! I'm going to try growing that red paw paw variety that the Diggers Club stocks. Fingers crossed!

And they are equally rubbish in Brisbane compared to red papaya from the tropics :). In a greenhouse they should grow pretty good in Melbourne though

I found that the seeds germinate more than readily in a polyhouse & they tend to come up in the compost just like toms, pumpkins, etc.but the following winter killed them off. This was in SW Vic.
I purchased a "yearling" papaya from the local nursery here in WA & it has only lost its older leaves. I have it in one of those little Bunnings plastic green houses but hope to plant it out in the spring. Anyone know how it will fair?
One of the delicious meals i had in Darwin acouple of weeks ago was Pawpaw
salad. It was made from shredded unripe papayas, nuts & spices.

So what would you all think is a good variety of paw paw?
I was thinking of getting the Pawpaw - Cutting Grown Southern Red that they have here at daleys.
Is that the red variety your talking about?
Thanks
Steven

Can someone tell me why the papaya fruits on my tree dont grow any bigger than 5-6 cms and then they go slightly yellow and fall off.
In the beginning I was thrilled that there were so many fruits, but not one of them reached maturity. Your advice would be much appreciated.

Hello Saphira
Sounds like your tree lacks Calcium, apply a clenched handfull of Dolomite per square metre once a month until they come good.
If the lower leaves are also yellowing you should add sulphate of potash as well
