I have several Daly's papaya trees which have survived the frosts and are flowering now. No fruit setting but plenty of flowers. How can I get fruit to set?

They seem to set fruit naturally babyruth, but with mine the prevailing wind side has less fruit so protection or no wind at all would seem ideal. Mine was a seedling from Bunnies & spent the first winter in a greenhouse before planting out early spring a year ago with a plastic tent built round it.
12 months seems to be the UV limit for builders "grunt" plastic sheeting because it shredded & was removed last spring.
Amazingly I have one early fruit ripen & it was quite edible, & also made the authentic Thai papaya salad with a couple of green ones, delicious!
Here she is well out of her comfort zone, but producing!

I have heard the fruit can taste disgusting if grown out of the tropics. My trees / fruit looked similar to yours Snott. Now I'm not sure if they tasted terrible because they were grown out of their comfort zone or if I just don't like Papaya. Can't go by supermarket fruit. Most supermarket fruit is disgusting :p

Amused there are lots of bad tasting ones grown in tropics as well. Some have a disagreeable taint that I have heard called nasturtium just as some mangoes have a turpsy quality. If they are picked too early or it is too cool during their latter development the flavour and sweetness won't develop properly. The best tasting ones can ripen too fast or be too soft for commercial farms.Sydney is about their southern limit and references usually say 32 lat. is the limit. They would taste best towards the end of summer there and some varieties would do better than others.

Thanks Mike. I might give them another try. Do you have a variety that is a personal favorite or is it variable from fruit to fruit according to climate and season?

Amused, the red bisex ones like the solos,NG long red, thai long red, aussie red and a few that just have letters and numbers for names taste consistently better than others. They are however a little more warm loving than most yellows and non-bisex ones. There has been a lot of X-breeding and some bisex reds are pretty cold hardy. The best type I have ever tried is aussie red.

The bisex reds do OK here @33.16 lat, half way between Sydney and Newcastle and 12k from the coast. Being slightly elevated helps as well I think. Taste is excellent.
Trying some cuttings this year of RB2's and red bisex's as well.

Howdy John MC ,yeah I reckon 35 lat rather than 32 latitude on the east coast might be closer to the southern limit. If summer is warm enough fruit of most types should be good.Just some like solo might not turn out as good near their southern limit.I've seen good paw paws in the kenyan highlands where there are cool evenings year round and in northern thailand where winters are pretty brisk.

Mike, if you look at the latitude on a map you will see that I am about level with Orange NSW! Only difference of course is that we encounter some cold winds from the Southern Ocean over a relatively small landmass!

SG, yes that sound right about 33 and bit which would line up with wyong in NSW.You might get higher maxes in summer than the east coast equivalent which would help paw paws ripen.

Mike, being on the southern limit, I'll let you know how your solo X's go, also your Aussie reds (worlds best) as labelled. They are growing very well at this stage.
So far I've picked some delicious reds I grew from seeds bought off EBay a couple of years ago.

John, my original aussie red was taken out (not dating) by cyclone larry and I got seeds back from someone I gave a paw paw to.He pulled out a few that were males and females and about 4 of 6 bisex ones grown out turned out like the original including very heavy productivity.Fruit are spherical, very heavy (1.5 to 2kg) with no real hollow, immaculate skin, deep red flesh and an exquisite flavour.Queensland solos are pear shaped,0.5 to 1kg,orange fleshed, with little hollow and a sweet and pleasant flavour.
I hope they come true to type and thrive there so you can try them.

Hi Mike,

I am sorry about that. It was my fault. I should have been careful in packing the seeds. I will keep you posted on mine. I think I need luck but I think it does not matter because they were only for experiment and curiosity.
Thank you very much for letting me know.

Mike, you sent me 20-30 pawpaw seeds not long ago, they are all up and ready to be planted if you want any back?
BTW, did I ever send you some perpetual leek? It's like normal leek only throws off many bulbets around the parent just like onion weed does. Once it takes hold, you will never run out of leeks.

David you bet it was brisk and work looked like an arctic explorer convention with all the woollies. That is what prompted me into winter vegie action mode.It will take less than a day to prepare and plant it out.
Mary,John thanks but I have 100's of paw paw seedlings including aussie reds but learning how to space and squeeze everything into my humble space is the issue.I'm becoming a space cadet and managing it.John I just can't grow leeks and presume they need it cooler.I should have a good diversity this season thanks to the people on this forum who have given my vegie assortment some real muscle.

I think the better half has that in mind for me to Mike, right now the vegie garden is a mess. For some reason this year a new weed has presented itself, its a real challenge to get rid of it ,really tenacious roots, and seems to be appearing all over the garden

David the weed control folk could have their field days at my place so theyt could see all of them in one spot.Luckily my 12m x 3.5m vegie patch was overun by snake bean, sweet potato, dragon gourd and jicama vines that formed a mat on the ground with fallen pit pit. After removing about 3m3 of vine I noticed there were no weeds so I dug and mulched. If you just lash out and dig the weeds as well as pull them and then mulch the momentum could just continue.Even glyphosate if you have to.I just had a moment of clarity and then struck back at weeds all over he yard on the weekend.

I try to be as organic as possible,i only have 2 1.5m x3m at present and combined with full time work does not make for a clear vegie garden, Mike im now suffficiently impressed by your effort to tackle it this weekend, weathers good so what can go wrong, ive tried Babaco again, for the umpteenth time ,seems to be going ok, It seems turn its feet up at the slightest hint of over watering , or soggy soil.

I tried to kill my babaco. Pulled it up and chucked it on the ground and put mulch over top. Now I have 3 or 4 babaco popping their heads up.

I did a days worth weeding last weekend. With the ground still moist its the perfect time to get them out.

My babaco had a paw paw crash on it as it was powering towards 1m in height.I'm amazed it is still alive and sprouting strongly in the last week.Time is my enemy as well David but there seem to be enough breaks in the running and juggling lately for me to revisit the garden.I have my last few tropical asparagus seeds, red okra, chick peas,Egyptian spinach, russian cucumber, sesame and tuscan kale and many more and I can't plant them all.Jujube if you're out there what is Ran otay?

They taste good too.I pick them when less than 1m and firm (peeling is optional) and try them in a variety of dishes. The angled and short fat luffas don't taste as good to me.I'm not planting them on purpose now but some volunteers pop up.Their future here probably rests with you and jujube.

I am just using the Malaysian name for the preferred (most popular) banana of there,Thailand, vietnam and parts of the philipines and Indonesia.Mine is just the same as the ones you see in SE Asia and my understanding is that it was 'rebadged' ducasse over here.Thai folk said mine is the real deal and is a bit sweeter, pastier, thinner skinned and stays fresh longer than some I've seen called ducasse.Jujube tried them and might know if they are the same as the common vietnamese banana and ducasse.
