My mum told me a way of identifing paw paws male from female. when the plant in just popping up 2 inches or so dig them up. the one that has a splayed root system is a female and the one with a definate tap root type look is the male.
I have worked on this theory and have been able to grow female trees over the years.

That's great! I have hoed out most of the females in Brisbane, because the males usually grow stronger.

Replying to ringelstrumpf, my Dad keenly trimmed the old branches off our single Macadamia nut tree for 20 years thinking he was doing the right thing and encouraging the tree to grow tall and strong. The only problem was it never flowered, though it looked good. Then one year he was too busy to trim the tree and guess what - it bore flowers on the bottom oldest branches, which we then found out it will always do. One nut was finally borne and matured and we divided the single nut into thirds, between Mum, Dad and I. I didn't have brothers or sisters. That first Macadamia nut was a significant part of our gardening family history.

Dear Loma,
I will tell my friend in Charters Towers who is raising a fine batch of dozens of pawpaw seedlings and see if your theory works.

We once had a weird male pawpaw with fruit on long stalks, tasted a bit "male".

I used to love eating male pawpaw fruit, they are usually super sweet with no seeds.
