Duncan wilting and yellowing can mean a problem with the root system and they are prone to root rot.Prolonged soil wetness and cold wet soil in particular can promote fungal attack of the roots and the rot is hard to stop.Over-enthusiasm in the application of fertiliser and lime can burn roots and have the same effect.Fertilising should be light and well back from the trunk and liming done only in quite acid soils.Soil pH should be a little acid (6 to 7) and outside this range the plants can suffer.

Duncan, my papaya is accidently growing on a mound because I needed to remove the sand from around it for level paving purposes.
Initially I worried about its survival, but amazingly it thrived & I am picking ripe fruit from it at the moment!
I can only put your problem down to wet feet & hope that if you cease watering now yours may recover. Dynamic Lifter is no problem to mine, it loves it.

I hope someone can help with my papaya problems. I have 2 bi-sexual plants, a red and a yellow. Despite both being almost identical in size when planted, and sharing the same conditions (are planted 30cm apart), the yellow has thrived and is twice the size of the red, and has been productive for the last year. The red has only just set some fruit. Is the red a slower grower, or does it need something more? Also, all the fruit on the red are developing small black spots as if an insect was stinging them, but the yellow fruit are unaffected. (The red fruit are more shaded due to the difference in plant height). Are the spots normal on a red? Any thoughts or tips appreciated. (I'm hoping the photos supplied can be seen- I'm having a bit of trouble uploading them.)
