Peach seeds (forum)

Hello guys, I've been eating some peaches from my tree and I've been trying to keep the seeds to try and grow a few more plants from seed.

I've been keeping the kernal inside the actual seed, its this mushy brown thing, but I've kept a few now in a napkin and they've gone really dry and its flat.

I'm assuming they're now dead?

Do they need to be put into a pot right away?

Thanks guys.

No need to extract the kernel.
Take a look at the way to grow peach rootstocks, you can follow that, but you wont be grafting them. The main point is the 3 months chilling(cold moist stratification). Its usually pretty reliable in the fridge, but may not need fridge in Romsey winter.

i found that if seed placed in refrigerator for 3 months it comes out shriveled and nonviable. You need to put it in some sort of moist environment whilst in fridge, say soil.

Sorry, that link didnt open where I thought, heres the info, could use peat or coir instead of sawdust. Soil can be hard to get the air+moisture levels right for storage.

Growing peach rootstocks
An article relating to high chill stonefruit grown on the Granite Belt.

Seed can be extracted from ripe fruit. The fruit is allowed to fully ripen and fall to the ground.
You can easily clean extracted peach stones by placing the seed in a cement mixer with some water. The addition of some sharp gravel may also assist. Once extracted and washed, air dry the seed in the shade and store in a cool, dry place.
To overcome dormancy, seeds must undergo a period of moist chilling. When the seed is received, the kernels may be slightly shrivelled due to air drying. Ensure the kernels absorb water before being chilled by soaking the peach stones in water for 24-48 hours. Crack some stones to ensure they have absorbed water and are fully swollen.

The seeds are now ready for chilling. There is no need to crack the seeds from the stones. Seed can be chilled naturally in a cool, shaded position, or in a cold store or refrigerator. Relying on natural chilling may be risky if the winter is mild.

Pack the peach stones in plastic bags mixed with moist sawdust (enough to reduce any risk of seeds drying out in the cold store). After 2-3 months, the seed will start germinating and cracking out of the stones. This is an indication that most of the seed has had enough chilling and can be removed from cold store.
