Picked up a bargain at Dawsons in O'Connor yesterday. Nice sized Peach for $40. They had plenty of small size for $28 ish but for a few dollars more they were nearly double in size. Some double grafts also with Peach / Nectarine.

Not much talked about ,but a peach will grow true to seed and produce fruit in 3 years ,which is much the same time as a graft.

Huh? Seedlings are variable.!! Thats how you breed new types by crossing type A with type B and seeing what comes of it.

Thats my understanding too. Hence one of the reasons all fruit trees are grafted. Guranteed true to parent.

Mind you, you could also strike cutttings to get a tree true to the parent- but the rootstocks are generally more vigorous/disease resistant

Yes, my dear Watson ;seedlings are variable and water is wet. My point is that if a plant is selected for long enough, the undesirable characteristics are selected out . One is then left with a little variability but such variability is of desirable characteristics. This ,I repeat, only applies to highly slected species such as peaches. You can get a bad egg but rarely a bad peach from a seedling.

I think we have had this discussion before in relation to nectarines ( a very close relative) and I wasn't the only one to say that the best nectarine I have ever tasted was seed grown and I have since had one come up in the chook yard which is delicious, very sweet and matures very late thus extending the seaon nicely.

For the home garden i'm sure raising from seed will get you a nice tree, close to the original.

Not sure about Jimmy, but I had in mind mass production. With large numbers you will get diversity.

I have a miniature nectarine grown from seed. It's 2 years old, less than a foot high. Does anyone out there know much about growing these things out from seed? How can I keep it safe and how long before it flowers? I live in braidwood, and the weather is quite variable, severely cold at times.

Hi Jen, Ive never bothered to grow any fruit trees from seed. Not that it cant be done, or that you will get a great tree in the end. Just that for $20 or $30 you get a tree with a year or so growth, disease free on good root stock and guranteed to be like the parent tree (no risk)

I have patience but not that much for $20 :)
