peach tree problem (forum)

I have a 2 year old peach tree that my daughter bought for me. It has not done well. There is a 2nd branch coming out of the soil next to the main trunk. This spring leaves appeared on the 2nd branch, but not from any branches coming from the main trunk. Then last week I noticed the leaves looked like they had been eaten or ripped. The following day all the leaves were gone. The peach tree is only about one metre high. I cant decide what is the best way to treat my peach tree. Can anyone help?
