Peach Variety (forum)

zady starts with ...
Hi guys, new to the forum.
I am looking for a peach variety, it maybe be an old variety, i am not sure.
Sorry to be so very vague about it.
Basically they are HUGE peaches, with a deep orange skin, and matching flesh. Very firm and sweet and juicy, and, well, 'peachy.' It also did not have a blush to it.
Any help or leads would be great.

If you can pinpoint the maturity date that might help narrow the varieties.
Have a look at pics and descriptions of Elberta, O'henry and Redhaven as these are quite common among backyard orchardists.

Hi Chris, thanks for the help I will go have a look at those varieties. I really can't be any more specific, it has been 10 years since I have seen\eaten these peaches. They were in the garden of a rental property I was in.
I did, however, just find this "Prunus persica 'Veteran'" which while it doesn't quite match with my memory, is very close.

Our F&V shop gets them in - and I know they have been around for a long, long time...

I have pretty much stopped buying a lot of stone fruit in the shops...they are just bloody awful these days.
Thank goodness they haven't 'messed' with mangoes yet...I didn't buy a single plum this season... :-(

You could be on to something there Amanda, the peaches were in Griffith NSW, about 40 mins from Leeton, which had the Letona fruit factory.

I agree completely with the shop fruits. It's all so expensive and you get 'fruit starved' so give in and buy it, and it tastes like cardboard. * le sigh*

Yes zady - and then they sell them post-season too..yukk.. This peach I am thinking of is very uniform in colour, very orange, furry, large and used to be good (in the "olden days" !? lol) it seems to bruise easily so I am thinking that's why it's not around much anymore...or maybe it's a taste thing - the 'white' uber-sweet varieties taking over now.

Maybe have google of 'canning peaches in Aust' or such - or - start this topic under a new thread when u get a good lead. Someone here will know 4 sure :) (Roleystone Julie likely..)

I have googled those suggestion, a few leads but no pictures of the peaches, which is pretty much all I can go by, and yes, now that you mention it they were very furry. So I think we are thinking of the same variety. Hopefully Roleystone Julie will see this thread and be able to shed some light. :D

You are right about the post season as well, and then they charge extra because they are out of season.

It doesn't look as orange as I remember, but that could be due to 10 years of lusting after the unknown peach.
But I think it *may* be the one I am after.
In any case it sounds delicious so I am sure it will be a great addition to my garden.

That is what Amanda suggested as well.

The picture you link too does not look as bright as the peach of my memory, it was a deep dark orange, both skin and flesh. But of course that could be a combination of the colour not coming through in the pic, and my imagination making the colour stronger than it really is.
But I will definitely be getting a Golden Queen for my garden, as chances are both you and Amanda are right. :D

Golden Queen is the most common large firm peach and one of the few that are orange on the outside and inside. It's also the peach nearly all Australian associate with "peach" flavour since it's the only peach they use in cans here. Even if it tastes quite different to most peaches we still think of that golden queen flavour as "peach" :). So all added up, I'm pretty sure that's the one you remember. The flesh also sticks very strongly to the seed, if you can remember that.

They can be darker orange or lighter, depends how ripe they are and I guess where you grow them

I actually find that rather funny, while tinned peaches are ok, I would never have connected them with the peach variety I am looking for, taste wise. There is just no comparison in flavour.

And yes, the peaches were very 'clingstoney.' It certainly does sound like you have pinpointed it for me.

The Golden Queen taste exactly like a canned peach, just not cooked or with the added sugar :). That makes a difference, but you can still tell what peach it is being orange and firm and roughly the same flavour (compared to other peaches)

I know you are right Jason, I just meant that, to me, the fresh peach was just so much better than the tinned variety. I would never have connected the 'less' flavour of tinned peaches with the perfection that was the fresh fruit flavour of the peaches ... lol can you tell i am slightly obsessed with this particular peach variety?:D Hopefully if everything works to plan I will be able to get a Golden Queen planted asap. I notice you are also in Portland, Jason. How do you find growing peaches in general, here ?

Zady, if you are around Portland. They grow well inside Portland, they grow REALLY well in Heywood. They don't grow so good in the heavier red band of soil in between that runs through the Cobboboonee and Bolwarra. But in the sandy grey stuff in town, that suits them just fine. I you are in the more acid red soil then it's best to grow them on a peach/plum hybrid rootstock. There's a very good seedling of Golden Queen out on the highway by the way that maybe a bit later ripening than the original

That is excellent news, Jason. I am currently renting in Portland and hoping to buy in Heywood in the next couple of months :D And if there is only one tree I get to flourish in my yard it is this peach.
I haven't noticed the Golden Queen on the highway, how far out? And I will have a look tomorrow on my drive to work.

The Golden Queen seedling is past Heywood on the way to Hamilton, you probably wont notice it now until Spring time when it flowers unless you know exactly where it is but it'll be obvious when it flowers. I'm going to get a couple sticks off it during winter to graft it. I've been meaning to do that for years and years but never seem to get around to it.

There's heaps of great peach and nectarine trees all around Heywood, super easy to grow them there so it sounds like a good plan. The soil in Heywood is all ex river silt and is crazy good, it's also 3-5 degrees c warmer everyday compared to Portland so it's really easy to grow just about anything. Figs grow really good there. The only problem is that it sometimes gets really cold at night, -3 or -4c is possible so if you were to have an Avocado tree or something like that you might need something a bit tougher than Hass

I think that the peach Zady was looking for is not Golden Queen as it does not have a blush. There is a later variety ,clingstone , yellow flesh, called Firtime or Fairlane from memory; it is the last commercial peach.

I don't think the peach in question is GQ either. But, Fairlane is a late maturing nectarine, not a peach. I think you mean Fairtime , which is also late maturing.

From the information everyone has given me, combined with my memory of the peach, I think, as Amanda said, a safe bet that it is golden queen.
orange skin, orange flesh, no blush, very fuzzy, clingstone, and close to a canning factory, with it being a canning peach. So that is what I shall definitely be putting in first.
Talking of which, Jason, do you think it would be possible for me to beg, steal or borrow, one or two of those grafts if you get around to getting them? And hopefully, in the future, I will be able to return the favour.

Yeah sure zady, I'll see if I can find a peach seedling or three laying around over Winter and graft that tree from the highway onto it. Maybe the original Golden Queen too. I usually have quite a few peach seedlings come up in early spring from under the peach/plum hybrid thing which is good to use as a peach rootstock.

I've got plenty of seeds and wood to fill up a backyard, there's actually quite a few legendary fruit growers inside Portland so there's no shortage of finding the material

Thanks Jason,I drive around and see all the beautiful gardens and itch to grow my own fruit and veg. But up until the chance to have my own home, I have not really bothered with trying to garden, as I have moved to much to make it a viable option.
