Help! How do you get pears to ripen...last season's just went brown and soft or stayed all woody. I have not been able to find much info on ripening pears successfully. any info would be much appreciated.

Pears are picked when mature but still hard. If you leave them on the tree too long they become mealy. A good way to test is to lift a pear from where it is hanging on the branch to a horizontal position. If it snaps off easily that's a good indication. If you have to twist it off it's not quite ready.

Thanks Phil I did that...I'm finding that's best with all fruit....wait till they actually feel like they want to leave the tree...works with the citrus really well....maybe this year will be better because we have had some decent rain...everything else is powering..maybe the pears will too.....
cheers
