Hi I just saw a reference to a persimon '20th Century' as being astringent. I thought it was non-astringent.

Anybody know the answer?

Thanks aNON but the information came from Daleys. I just bought a 20th Century Persimmon but the person I bought it from didn't know much about it but she thought it was N/Astringent.

I looked on Google and the only 20th century I got was a nashi pear as you suggest.

regards

Bob, I've got a 20th century persimmon. I believe it is a variant on the "Fuyu" so I think it is non astringent. Got to wait till the coming winter before I can tell you for sure. (I hope anyway)

Thanks David will look forward to hearing what it is.

Mine isn't doing too good since I planted it in the orchard. I gave it a good feed but the leaves curled up and have all dropped. Still it is not dead so I am hoping that next spring it will come right.

I am hoping it is astringent as those are my favourite persimmons.

regards

Bob

The daleys description has them as astringent:
"Persimmon - 20th Century (A)

An astringent persimmon with medium sized fruits. Excellent back yard tree, it is precocious and is delicious eaten fresh when fully ripe. The tree has particularly beautiful autumn colours in its foliage before the leaves drop for winter."

I have two, they haven't done much compared to the other astrigent varieties I got off daleys. Similar conditions and fertz given to all.

Any ideas on getting these guys to grow when they just sit there and do nothing?

Hi J - Mine has not shot out of the ground and is about 1m tall after 3.5 years but it is prolific and produces great fruit that ripens off nicely. You have to be very watchful they look OK but not fully ripe one day and can be on the ground the next.

Gave mine Chook manure and it has loved it.

Hi! Did you figure out whether the 20th century is an astringent or non-astringent variety?
